Where We're At

In my last post I asked if anyone else found it odd that Saddam has not been charged at all for the crimes/actions the Bush administration said he was guilty of and which ultimately led to our invasion.

The comment section brought up some really good points especially by Sminklemeyer and Craig that leads this whole thing in another direction. I agree with them that Saddam was an evil, terrorist war criminal and had to go. But, now that Saddam has been charged with the crime of genocide for gassing the Kurds in 1988, what affect should evidence that suggests that the Reagan administration supplied Saddam with the poisonous gas and the delivery systems used on the Kurds have on our reasons for invasion?

NOTE: I am traveling to San Diego this weekend. Currently I'm waiting to catch a plane in StL. Once I get settled in SD I will respond to comments and update the site more. PS tornadoes suck!!

**ANOTHER NOTE: I apologize for totally screwing this post up. The conference I'm attending in San Diego turned out to be much more time consuming than I thought it would be. I thought I would have more time to answer comments and do posts, that's what I get for thinking. Maybe by the weekend I will get some free time and do something with this place. Or maybe I'll just trash it and start over. Sorry again.

Notice the dead silence.

Yeah, silence because people don't know their history.

Let's recall why the U.S. once supported Saddam: Because he was battling Iran.

I bet Alice had no idea.

There is no doubt that Saddam was once an ally of ours. I don't know what else I can add to that... he was a frigging ALLY. What does that tell you about us?

ha ha

I venture to guess Alice probably has a few on most of the people that comment here.
I however don't know my history so I had to read up on things when
MJ post them.
Not everyone is fully informed on every aspect of history but I think most people here reasonably do research before posting inanities.

MJ you have given me a lot to think about over the last year and this is no different.
For every point there seems to be a counter point that can be dug out of somewhere.
Saddam was no different as our ally than he was when we decided to go after him for no justifiable reason.

TO ALL: I apologize, but I will be traveling to San Diego this weekend. Once I get settled in, I will make time to address people's comments. While in San Diego, I'm going to meet up with Kent and let him buy me beer :)

Not only did we supply what was used on the Kurds, but compounding that is how we really kinda let them down.

We told them to rise up, overthrow the government, etc, and that'd we'd support them. Sadly, we did not, and they paid the price.

While this is an aweful even in history, it does beg one question: Why do conservatives use evidence of what Saddam did in 1995 to justify an invasion in 2003?

I didn't just track down and beat the shit out of the trucker who flicked me off at a red light back in December of 1997?

The answer to my question is this: Bush supporters have nothing else to support this war. If they did, they wouldn't be reaching back a decade ago to justify what we're doing now.

Cowgirl -
You just brought up a point I love to use when arguing with my conservative "friends" when talking about Iraq's relationship to 9/11 and global Islamic terrorism.

Conservatives aren't really big fans of facts, fancy book-learnin' and all that, and History is a subject that doesn't deviate from this.

They don't remember we were aligned with Saddam because of one reason, and that Saddam hated Iran for the same reason we did: Both the US and Saddam were not happy about the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran, hated the Ayatolha (sp?), and wanted to crush the fundamentalist Muslim power stemming from that nation at that time.

Call Saddam what you will - but the guy hated fundamentalists, Wahhabists, and anything else associated with what happened during 9/11. He was a dictator but he was our dictator for a reason.

The Iran/Iraq was is really all you need to know about Saddam's feelings toward radical Islam in his back yard.

Conservatives refuse to apply this to conventional thinking regarding the threat of terrorism and where it's coming from today. They just see a brown skinned man who hates our country, and therefore, they're on board with any war we can start.

They are cultural morons, and so is our "president."
