Step One

Former Illinois Governor, Republican George Ryan guilty on all counts! This is great news for Illinois, great news for America and great news for democracy.

Illinois, The Land of Lincoln, the birthplace of the Republican Party, and just like the beginnings of that Party the beginnings of the Republican culture of corruption began here too. Along with the corrupt actions of Republican Congressman Duke Cunningham of California this latest Republican corruption scandal is but one step forward in a long line of bitter Republican incompetence that has gripped this nation.

For those who have not followed this story, I will say that I am from Illinois and George Ryan is slime. I'll have more about all this later, but for now it's on to DeLay, on to Abramoff, on to Libby, on to Rove, on to Frist and the rest of the Republican immorality.

Wow another Republican scumbag breaking the law. There exists a site where someone is keeping a "Republican indictment" scorecard of sorts...I have to go look for it but I'll post it here later...

Lets start in the heartland and go from there.

Interesting though. I didn't know that Illinois had it's very own scumbag. Congratulations.

Hell YEAH, they've had their very own scumbags... what - the last three Guvs of the state have been indicted for something or another I think? I don't think it's got anything to do with Illinois, other than the fact that the folks of Illinois seem to be a little bit quicker than their politicians in the sense that they CATCH the bastards.

This is a great day for Illinois and our Democrocy. Congrats, Chris! I wish we in the red state of Alabama had the same conviction for throwing the books at these crooked bastards.

Blog ON, bro...

jeremy, yeah Josh Marshall has the Grand 'Ol Docket up and running. I'm just amazed by how many Republicans are being sent to prison and under federal investigation and how little media coverage there is of it.

Alice, oh we have a whole slew of them. Ryan is just the tip of the iceberg. Illinois is its own monster. In '02 Democrats took the state over and inherited a $5 billion deficit, the largest in state's history. It's been a rocky time. Thanks for reading.

GTL, you know your politics. In Illinois, the last two Democratic governor's have been indicted, with one going to prison. That was in 1976 I think. From '76 to '02 Republicans had complete control of the state, ran up a $5 billion deficit and used political payoffs to hold their power. Now our Democratic governor is also under federal investigation for his campaign donations. Though no indictment has been handed yet. Crazy, crazy place.

businessman, I hope so, God I hope so.

cowgirl, you sound like a lot of fun :)
I've only met Ryan once or twice. In 1998 I worked for Poshard, the guy who ran against Ryan, so I will add that I am not a very big Ryan person at all. As if you couldn't already tell :)

But you are correct that Ryan is/was a nice guy. He probably did more good things for the state than any governor in 50 years. It's sad that power is such a recipe for disaster. Thanks for reading.
