Just the Beginning

I’m not sure I can add anything new to what’s already been said from Josh and Ezra about Obama’s win last night in Iowa. Other than to throw my own self worth into the mix that I agree with Josh and Ezra by stating that unlike them two, I personally know Barack Obama, worked for him and traveled many a long day with him. He’s a great guy and I wish him the best.

As for the larger picture of Iowa, BO’s victory last night did nothing to change my mind about the caucus itself. I still think it’s overblown and a completely worthless way to begin a national election. One thing, among many, that I was wrong about was the turnout. Early indications are that as many as 335,000 total turned out for both parties. That’s staggering. One could almost make the argument that that number legitimizes the caucus. I still would have a hard time being convinced of such, but I would be very inclined to see such an argument.

With such a record setting turnout a number of quick positives pop into my mind. One, it shows the American people are definitely ready for change and the Bush fatigue is now a fully fledged exhaustion. All the scandals, all the indictments, all the jail birds, all the incompetence has finally worn out its welcome.

Second, it shows people are involved and motivated. It’s almost as people are beginning to realize that the government, in all its forms, is their government and not that of a few select families and large special interest groups.

Let's see how NH turns out before we get too gaga though. I'll leave it with BO's victory speech. I must say I've seen him do better, but this one was good.

Note: I'll have more about the Repubs later today.
