The French- An Obstacle?

Who would have thought the French would impede on the multi-polarity of Europe????

I shouldn't be smiling.

French No Vote on European Constitution Rattles Continent

Or for those who refuse to read the NY Times because they think it's liberal propaganda, here's a link from the Times of London:

There may be no going back to the ways of 'old' Europe

And for those who refuse to believe anything unless it's Fox News:

Pass the Pate

And if you still don't want to trust the link, Dude it's the French just believe it.

I'm curious as to where the "Non" will lead France, much less Europe. I think I will have to get le-plume to do some commenting on this.

Thanks for asking dude... ;-)

I wrote a note tonight describing my take on the event - took me a bit: I was voluteering at a polling station from 8am to 11pm on Sunday and was working on Monday morning - I was a bit subdued yesterday, and that had nothing to do with the outcome of the vote.

I took a look at the links you referred to in your post. I've got the impression that they're mostly rehashing what the "yes" advocates have been saying during the last day of the campaign: that people who were planning to vote "no" were just angry idiots who were totally missing the point.

The thing is, this might be true for some of the people who ended up voting "no". The rest of us read as much of the text as they could (check the pointer in my last entry and see if you can do better than that), pondered the question and decided this was not good enough to become a constitution for Europe. Does that make us a bunch of xenophobic idiots? I don't think so.

Hey le-plume good to see you!

For me to make any sort of comment regarding the EU constitution would be extremely irresponsible of me, since I have not read it or actually kept up with the debate.

From the outside, ignorant would be a better word to describe me at this point, I don't see how the EU is to survive without some constitutionalism- if that makes sense..??

However, judging from what I have read and heard, I think if I were in France and able to vote yes or no for the current constitution, I would have voted NO as well. I would have also studied up on the debate and made a well-informed decision, like you have.

I will check out your site and read your commentary of the vote.

Thanks for reading. And yes you are correct about what I linked to. Mostly American and British papers like to bash the French. I think the opposite is true in France as well. We call it SOS in America.

That's the thing: I'm very much in favor of a constitution for Europe, but this wasn't a constitution: just another treaty, and not very well designed. It makes me think of one of these soups whith a bit of evreything - tasting like mud in the end.

Just take a minute to look at it. Part III is the worst, I think. Sunday's result will make a lot more sense to you once you have seen the actual text!

Charles Krauthammer was talking about it in brief on Special Report. He described it as a Socialist Manifesto. It's also way too detailed and focused on minutia, according to him.
